This is an editorial comment by the ONE, TRUE and OFFICIAL website of Conneaut, Ohio for May 20, 2009.

Last Friday, May 15, the Law Director for the City of Conneaut set a letter to Conneaut resident Katie Schwartz making two points:

Regarding Mrs. Schwartz’s website:  “…immediately cease and desist publishing any information concerning the City’s offices, employees and/or departments without the express written consent and approval of the City of Conneaut.” (emphasis in the original)  The city lawyer continues, “…any attempts to portray your website as one endorsed by or presented on behalf of Conneaut City government is misleading.”

We could not agree with the city lawyer more.  Mrs. Schwartz must cease & desist publishing & portraying forthwith.  Her website is not “the ONE, TRUE and OFFICIAL website of Conneaut, Ohio.”  This one is.

Regarding Mrs. Schwartz’s weekly news show on the local public access cable channel:  Again, right on.  The city magnanimousness goes unappreciated by Mrs. Schwartz.  For example, the city provides parking spaces – therefore the city can decide who parks in them.  Likewise, the cable utility is a mere extension of city government, just as General Motors is a mere extension of federal government.

“Public accommodation”, like “transparency”, is what the City Manager says it is.  The things that go into a city council meetings, like those that go into sausages, should not be observed.

We further urge the city to investigate the subjects that may be discussed on Mrs. Schwartz’s telephone – rather, the city’s telephone that Mrs. Schwartz is permitted to use – to establish the possible need for city supervision of such communications in the event they are found to be “inaccurate and/or outdated”, in the words of the diligent city lawyer.

Lastly, we congratulate Mr. Robert Schaumleffel, Jr. who has overcome the burden of his name to become City Manager of Conneaut.  On the job less than a year, he is already cracking-down on those who organize to “dig up dirt”.

“I don’t know what the hell is going on.”  said City Manager Schaumleffel Jr.

We couldn’t agree more.
